Easter Celebration

At Easter time there is a tradition to color and decorate eggs. Perhaps this legend can explain why…

Mary Magdalene was one of the women who had gone to Jesus' tomb, but she had found it empty. She ran to the house in which the disciples were, entered and announced the extraordinary news.

Peter, one of the disciples, watched in disbelief and said: “I will believe what you say only if the eggs in that small basket will become red."  And immediately the eggs color changed into an intense red!

Every culture has developed their own way to decorate eggs. Sometimes hard eggs are used, dyed with colors from vegetables and foods if the intent is to eat them. Or they are emptied making a small hole with a needle on the bottom of the egg, therefore using only the shell.

In order to color eggs you must broil them in a small pot of water, with a tablespoon vinegar and

  • onion, if you want them orange
  • spinach, if you want them green
  • tea, if you want them yellow
  • a cooked and grated beet, if you want them rose

Egg ShellOn the colored shell you can draw geometric or floral designs with a permanent pen, tempera paints, or stickers. Also, you can glue beads, flowers, macaroni, or anything you can come up with!
